Improve Photo Quality in Facebook:

1- Nikon Capture Nx2 for open NEF (RAW NIKON FORMAT)

2- Correct exposure, shadow and highlights protection, etc.. with CAPTURE NX

3- RESIZE to 720px (facebook default value). It’s nosense upload 2000px when facebook resize to 720px! photo loss quality if resized on FB.

4- EXPORT in TIFF 16 bit no compression (quality is 100%)
5- OPEN TIFF in Photoshop and correct Tone/Contrast/Vibrance (work in TIFF not in jpg!)

6- Final step is Smart Sharpen filter amount 150% and 0,3/0,5 radius (Very very important)

7- EXPORT photo in PNG 24 (lossless format, jpg is lossy format!). Best is TIFF but Facebook not support.

8- Upload on Facebook

Why choose PNG format?

PNG (pronounced “ping”) is the Portable Network Graphics format, a format for storing bitmapped (raster) images on computers.

“48-bit” (16 bits per channel) true color or 16-bit grayscale, lossless compression, gamma correction, two-dimensional interlacing, and best of all alpha transparency.

PNG’s compression is fully lossless–and since it supports up to 48-bit truecolor or 16-bit grayscale–saving, restoring and re-saving an image will not degrade its quality, unlike standard JPEG (even at its highest quality settings)…PNG supports three main image types: truecolor, grayscale and palette-based (“8-bit”). JPEG only supports the first two;

“Compression comes in two forms: lossless and lossy. Lossless compression loses none of the image information during compression and decompression. Lossy compression as its name says removes some of the original photographic detail. Lossy compression can reduce the size of image files to a far greater extent than lossless compression.”

JPG is a lossy technique that is designed to compress color and grayscale continuous-tone images. The information discarded at lower levels of JPG compression is designed to be information that the human eye cannot detect.

PNG is the only truecolor, lossless image format that is both cross-platform and application independent — meaning that, unlike TIFF, any supporting application will be able to read a PNG created by another application.

PNG produces smaller files sizes than either GIF or TIFF (typically between 5% and 30% smaller, but up to 60% in some cases). And because PNG is a lossless format, you can edit and save your images as often as you like without compromising image quality, unlike standard JPEG (even at maximum quality). That said, JPEG is still the preferred format for saving photographic imagery on the Web, as it produces much smaller files due to its lossy compression.
